Cannot say enough good things about our stay here. The staff provided an impeccable service from the moment we arrived, we felt like VIPs the whole time we were there. The location is stunning, situated up the hill at the back of town, away from the bustle of the tourist streets, and spanning the river, which we had a gorgeous view of from our room. The room was cosy and spacious. The traditional onsen ryokan aesthetic greets you the moment you walk in the door. Special mention given for catering to our awkward dietary requirements with the included meals (seafood allergy and a vegetarian between us). Our special dinner inclusions were still fantastic despite this, and I didn't feel like I was missing out or getting a "consolation prize" meal. The breakfast buffet is also good, it leans heavily toward Japanese cuisine but there's enough there for fussy westerners like me. This is definitely a great place to stay if a traditional Japanese breakfast is not to your taste. There's a couple of different baths to choose from. I enjoyed the outdoor bath with rich iron content in the water. The temperature of the water was also perfect for me. I also noticed they had a sign saying there were private baths available for guests with tattoos, which seems like a bit of a rarity.

Although the communication in english was not that easy the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful overall especially Aiko who attended us at our arrival. The atmosphere of the hotel is pleasant and warm that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. The hot tubs in open air, the food, the small souvenir shop in the lobby, the location of the hotel and the free shuttle service are all characteristics that make Arima Onsen Gekkoen Yugetsusanso uncomparable. I would recommend the hotel to friends who visit the neighbourhood. We used the free shuttle to visit the Mt. Rokko Arima Ropeway which is within a 4-minute drive from the hotel. That was after checking out of the hotel. Though they kept our luggage and drove us to and from the station. The Ropeway is also a must-to-do.

The setup is beautiful. We were in the Sakura season and the little spring was bordered by cherry trees in bloom and the bridge and lobby provided a beautiful view. We are not Japanese and we liked the food ( japanese) provided in the evening and morning, buffet style. We used the private cave bath and the common open baths and we liked both. Maybe more the common baths. Personnel was extremely polite and helpful. Arima has some picturesque old streets with traditional houses. All in all, it was a very nice experience for a foreigner in Japan, even for one night only.

We actually switched to Gekkoen Korokan which is the newer wing due to the musty smell in our room at the Yugeysusanso wing. The staffs did above and beyond to satisfy our needs and switched to Korokan as my request (with additional charge) The customer service at Gekkoen is amazing. Great onsens and we always experienced the private onsen. Beautiful traditional onsen hotel with history. Location is close to the onsen street and shuttle service is provided from stations

Very cool Ryokan and hotel combination. The bridge in the photos is part of the hotel and divides the classic Ryokan side of the hotel and the more modern multilevel hotel. There are three onsen baths in the hotel and three more private baths that may be rented. We only went to the non-private baths which were still excellent. The bath in the modern hotel (Korokan) was super nice. We stayed in the classic Ryokan side. Great experience overall.
